Therapy for ADHD in Ontario

For many adults and adolescents, ADHD shows up as a pervasive pattern of difficulty with focus, organization, follow-through, and emotional regulation that affects every domain of life: work, relationships, and sense of self.

At Discourse Psychology Centre, our registered psychologists provide evidence-based therapy for ADHD to adults and adolescents across Ontario through secure virtual sessions.

Understanding ADHD

ADHD is a developmental disorder, which means that it starts in childhood, and progresses into teenage and adult years.

Often, adults and adolescents go undiagnosed for many years, and learn habits and strategies to compensate for difficulties with focus and inattention. That said, ADHD usually looks different for adults and adolescents than it does for children.

ADHD often presents as chronic procrastination, difficulty sustaining attention on tasks that aren’t immediately engaging, losing track of time, impulsivity in decisions or relationships, emotional sensitivity and reactivity, and a persistent gap between potential and performance.

Many adults with ADHD spent years being told they were lazy, disorganized, or not trying hard enough. The shame and self-criticism that accumulates over years of struggling can be as debilitating as ADHD itself.

How We Treat ADHD

Therapy for ADHD at Discourse Psychology Centre focuses on the practical and emotional dimensions of living with ADHD. Treatment draws on CBT-informed approaches adapted for ADHD, targeting executive functioning, organization, time management, goal setting, and procrastination, alongside work to address the shame, self-criticism, and low self-esteem that often accompany a lifetime of ADHD-related struggles.

Where emotional dysregulation is a significant feature, DBT-informed skills training may be incorporated to build distress tolerance and impulse control. Treatment is always tailored to the individual and guided by ongoing clinical assessment.

ADHD and Diagnosis

Some clients come to therapy with a formal ADHD diagnosis. Others suspect ADHD but have never been assessed. Both are welcome at Discourse Psychology Centre.

While we do not currently offer comprehensive psychoeducational assessments for ADHD, we can work with clients who are in the process of seeking assessment or who have already received a diagnosis and are looking for therapeutic support.

ADHD and Co-occurring Conditions

ADHD often comes with travel companions. Many clients with ADHD also experience anxiety, depression, emotion dysregulation, or relationship difficulties, sometimes as a direct consequence of years of struggling with unrecognized or untreated ADHD.

Our approach addresses the whole person, not just the ADHD symptoms in isolation.

Virtual ADHD Therapy Across Ontario

All ADHD therapy at Discourse Psychology Centre is delivered virtually, making it accessible to clients across Ontario, including Mississauga, Oakville, Milton, and the Greater Toronto Area.

Virtual therapy removes the logistical barriers of travel and offering flexibility that supports consistent attendance.
