Therapy for OCD in Ontario

Reviewed by Dr. Belal Zia, C.Psych., Registered Psychologist

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often misunderstood and can be extremely debilitating.

At Discourse Psychology Centre, our registered psychologists are experienced providers of evidence-based OCD treatment. We provide services to adults and adolescents across Ontario, using approaches specifically designed for OCD rather than generic anxiety therapy.

Understanding OCD

OCD is characterized by intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges (obsessions) that generate significant distress, and repetitive behaviours or mental acts (compulsions) performed to try to get rid of that distress. The relief that compulsions provide is temporary, and over time they strengthen the OCD cycle rather than breaking it.

OCD can take many forms. Common presentations include contamination fears and cleaning rituals, harm obsessions, symmetry and ordering compulsions, and intrusive thoughts of a religious, sexual, or violent nature.

Many people with OCD are deeply ashamed of their intrusive thoughts and spend years suffering in silence before seeking help.

How We Treat OCD

The gold standard treatment for OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), a structured, evidence-based approach that involves gradually confronting feared situations or thoughts, while resisting the urge to engage in compulsions. ERP works by breaking the cycle that maintains OCD, allowing the brain to learn that feared outcomes are unlikely and that distress can be tolerated without compulsions.

At Discourse Psychology Centre, ERP is delivered collaboratively, at a pace that feels challenging but manageable. Treatment is guided by ongoing assessment and tailored to each client’s specific OCD presentation. Where appropriate, ther CBT-informed approaches may also be used to address unhelpful beliefs that maintain OCD.

OCD is Treatable

Despite how debilitating OCD can feel, it responds very well to treatment.

Research consistently shows that ERP produces significant and lasting symptom reduction for most people who complete a course of treatment. Many clients who have struggled for years experience substantial improvement within a focused treatment program.

Virtual OCD Therapy Across Ontario

All OCD treatment at Discourse Psychology Centre is delivered virtually, making it accessible to clients across Ontario, including Mississauga, Oakville, Milton, and the Greater Toronto Area. Research supports the effectiveness of virtual ERP, and for many clients the ability to complete exposures at home, in their own space, actually enhances treatment adherence.

Getting Started

Many people with OCD wait years before seeking treatment, often due to shame about their intrusive thoughts or uncertainty about whether what they’re experiencing is OCD.

Frequently Asked Questions about OCD

  • How do I know if I have OCD?

OCD involves intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours or mental acts (compulsions) done to relieve the distress they cause. If these are time-consuming, distressing, or interfering with daily life, it's worth an assessment. OCD frequently co-occurs with anxiety and trauma, which can make it harder to recognize.

  • What's the most effective treatment for OCD?

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the gold-standard, evidence-based treatment for OCD. This is different from "generic talk therapy" and other forms of CBT. ERP at Discourse is delivered as individual therapy, sometimes alongside traditional CBT-informed work on the beliefs that keep OCD going.

Occasionally, as needed for client treatment, we include additional strategies to understand "root causes" of OCD, including Psychodynamic Therapy and other attachment-informed approaches exploring complex relationship patterns and childhood experiences.

  • Can OCD therapy be done online?

Yes. Research supports virtual ERP. For some clients, completing exposures in your own environment, where compulsions actually happen, can make treatment more effective.

  • How long does OCD treatment take?

It varies, but ERP is typically focused rather than open-ended, and many people who've struggled for years see meaningful improvement within a structured course of treatment.

  • Does insurance cover OCD therapy in Ontario?

Sessions with a registered psychologist are often covered under extended health benefits, with receipts provided for reimbursement. See our fees and insurance page for details.
