Frequently Asked Questions about Couples Therapy
What types of relationship issues do you treat in couples therapy?
We treat issues like communication, trust, intimacy, conflict resolution, and life transitions using EFT and CBT. Some couples come for minor challenges, aiming to try and improve communication before things get worse. Others come with bigger conflicts, including affairs or difficulties navigating major mental health problems like depression or addictions.
What is Discernment Counselling and who is it for?
Discernment counseling helps couples that are on the on the verge of a major decision about their relationship. The goal is to help them find confidence and clarity in making a decision about their future. It's typical for one partner to be invested in continuing the relationship, while the other is ambivalent or closer to ending the relationship.
How can a couples therapist help me and my partner?
Sometimes relationships can become neglected. Despite loving one another, partners can have difficulties communicating needs or hearing the other person.
A couples therapist helps by making problems clear and improving strategies for communication, while also helping both partners manage the behaviours that lead to escalation and disconnection.
What is the difference between a relationship coach, a couples therapist, a couples counsellor and a psychologist?
Couples therapy in Ontario can be tricky to navigate because of the different titles. Titles mainly refer to whether a person is professionally licensed to practice couples therapy.
Relationship coach and couples counsellor are not protected titles in Ontario. Sometimes a relationship coach in Ontario or a couples counsellor in Ontario will use those terms as descriptive title.
A couples therapist in Ontario refers to a professional who is licensed to provide couples therapy by a regulatory body in Ontario. Not all couples therapists in Ontario are psychologists, but a psychologist who offers couples counselling in Ontario is under the category of a couples therapist.
Is couples therapy the same as marriage counselling?
Largely, yes. "Marriage counselling," "couples counselling," and "couples therapy" are often used interchangeably. At Discourse Psychology Centre, all of it is evidence-based relationship care delivered by a registered psychologist, whether or not you're married.
