Therapy for Emotion Regulation in Ontario

For some people, emotions don’t just feel intense, they can feel unmanageable.

Overwhelming waves of distress, difficulty calming down after conflict, impulsive reactions that cause regret, or a persistent sense of emotional instability can make daily life feel exhausting and unpredictable.

At Discourse Psychology Centre, our registered psychologists provide evidence-based therapy for emotion regulation difficulties to adults and adolescents across Ontario through secure virtual sessions.

Understanding Emotion Dysregulation

Emotion dysregulation refers to difficulty managing the intensity, duration, or expression of emotional responses. It’s not simply being “too emotional.” It’s a pattern that often developed for good reasons, in environments where strong emotional responses were necessary or where emotional needs weren’t consistently met.

Common experiences include emotions that escalate quickly and are difficult to bring down, difficulty identifying what you’re feeling, acting impulsively during emotional distress, intense fear of abandonment or rejection, and a turbulent sense of self or identity.

These patterns can significantly affect relationships, work, and overall wellbeing.

How We Treat Emotion Dysregulation

Treatment for emotion dysregulation at Discourse Psychology Centre is evidence-based and tailored to each client’s specific needs and presentation.

Where appropriate, treatment incorporates DBT-informed skills training, drawing on the core DBT skill domains: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. Skills training is delivered in the context of individual sessions and integrated into a broader treatment plan rather than as a standard group-based DBT program.

Where appropriate, treatment may also draw use other strategies from treatments including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based approaches, Emotion-Focused Therapy or Psychodynamic Therapy to address deeper emotional patterns underlying emotion dysregulation.

Who is This For?

Emotion regulation therapy at Discourse Psychology Centre is appropriate for adults and adolescents who experience significant emotional sensitivity or instability, struggle with impulsive behaviours driven by emotional distress, or have difficulty maintaining stable relationships due to emotional reactivity.

It may also be appropriate for individuals who have experienced trauma and find that their emotional responses feel disconnected from their current circumstances.
