Discernment Counselling in Ontario

Reviewed by Dr. Belal Zia, C.Psych., Registered Psychologist

When a relationship reaches a point of serious uncertainty, where one or both partners are questioning whether to stay together or separate, traditional couples therapy isn’t always the right first step.

Discernment Counselling is a structured, short-term process designed specifically for couples at this crossroads. The aim is to help each partner gain clarity and confidence about the direction they want to move in.

Are You and Your Partner on the Brink of Divorce or Separation?

Discernment Counselling may be the right fit if you or your partner are:

  • Uncertain about whether you want to remain in the relationship.
  • Feeling that couples therapy would be premature or pointless given where things stand.
  • One partner leaning toward separation while the other wants to save the relationship.
  • Exhausted by recurring conflict with no clear resolution in sight.
  • Questioning whether the problems in the relationship are fixable, or whether you’ve grown too far apart.

If any of these resonate, you’re not alone.

Many couples reach this point, and having a structured space to explore these questions, without the pressure to commit to a particular outcome, can be enormously clarifying.

What Discernment Counselling Is and Isn't

Discernment Counselling is not couples therapy in the traditional sense.

In Discernment counselling, the goal is not to fix the relationship or resolve the conflicts that you are currently facing. The sole purpose is to help each partner gain clarity about what they want and why. The aim is that whatever decision is made, it is made thoughtfully and with confidence rather than out of exhaustion or reactivity.

The process typically involves a small number of sessions (typically between one and five), conducted with both partners together and individually.

At the end of the process, couples choose one of three paths: continuing the relationship as it is, separating, or committing to a period of couples therapy with full effort from both partners, with separation/divorce off the table.

High Conflict Relationships

Some couples that seek help are not just disconnected; they are caught in entrenched, high-conflict patterns that have become damaging to both partners and to their children.

High conflict relationships look like repeated escalation, difficulty de-escalating, persistent feelings of resentment or contempt, and an inability to resolve even minor disagreements without significant distress.

Working with high conflict dynamics requires a clinician who understands the patterns driving the conflict and can help partners slow down, understand their own contributions, and make deliberate choices about the future of the relationship.

This work is available at Discourse Psychology Centre.

Navigating Separation

For couples who have decided to separate, therapy can still play an important role.

Post-separation support helps individuals process grief and loss, manage co-parenting conflict, rebuild their sense of identity, and move forward with clarity and intention.

Individual therapy and couples therapy following separation is available at Discourse Psychology Centre for adults navigating this transition.

Frequently Asked Questions about Discernment Counselling

  • Is discernment counselling the same as couples therapy?

No. Couples therapy assumes both partners are committed to working on the relationship. Discernment counselling is for couples who aren't sure yet. The goal of the treatment is to develop clarity and confidence about the path forward, not necessarily fixing the relationship.

  • How many sessions does discernment counselling take?

It's brief by design. Discernment Counselling sessions are offered one session at a time. Typically, treatments last between one to five sessions, each a stand-alone conversation, combining time with both partners together and individually.

  • What happens if we decide to separate?

That's a valid outcome. We offer post-separation support to help you process the change, manage co-parenting, and rebuild through individual therapy or support around this life transition.

  • Does insurance cover discernment counselling in Ontario?

Sessions with a registered psychologist are often covered under extended health benefits. See our fees and insurance page for details.
