Therapy for Emotion Regulation in Ontario

Reviewed by Dr. Belal Zia, C.Psych., Registered Psychologist

For some people, emotions feel so intense that they are almost unmanageable.

Overwhelming waves of distress, difficulty calming down after conflict, impulsive reactions that cause regret, or a persistent sense of emotional instability can make daily life feel exhausting and unpredictable.

At Discourse Psychology Centre, our registered psychologists provide evidence-based therapy for emotion regulation difficulties to adults and adolescents across Ontario through secure virtual sessions.

Understanding Emotion Dysregulation

Emotion dysregulation refers to difficulty managing the intensity, duration, or expression of emotional responses. It’s not simply being “too emotional.” It’s a pattern that often developed for good reasons, in environments where strong emotional responses were necessary or where emotional needs weren’t consistently met.

Common experiences include emotions that escalate quickly and are difficult to bring down, difficulty identifying what you’re feeling, acting impulsively during emotional distress, intense fear of abandonment or rejection, and a turbulent sense of self or identity.

These patterns can significantly damage relationships, work, and overall wellbeing.

Who is This For?

Emotion regulation therapy at Discourse Psychology Centre is appropriate for adults and adolescents who experience significant emotional sensitivity or instability, struggle with impulsive behaviours driven by emotional distress, or have difficulty maintaining stable relationships due to emotional reactivity.

It may also be appropriate for individuals who have experienced trauma, or significant and unpredictable life transitions resulting in emotional responses that feel disconnected from their current circumstances.

How We Treat Emotion Dysregulation

Treatment for emotion dysregulation at Discourse Psychology Centre is evidence-based and tailored to each client’s specific needs and presentation.

Where appropriate, we use DBT-informed skills training, drawing on the core DBT skill domains: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. Skills training is delivered in the context of individual therapy sessions and integrated into a broader treatment plan rather than as a standard group-based DBT program.

Where appropriate, treatment may also use other strategies from treatments including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based approaches, Emotion-Focused Therapy or Psychodynamic Therapy to address deeper emotional patterns underlying emotion dysregulation.

Virtual Emotion Regulation Therapy Across Ontario

At Discourse Psychology Centre, we offer virtual therapy appointments, making treatment accessible to clients across Ontario, including MississaugaOakvilleMilton, and elsewhere in the Greater Toronto Area.

Virtual therapy is effective and offers the flexibility and accessibility that many clients find particularly helpful.

Frequently Asked Questions about Therapy for Emotion Regulation

  • What is emotion dysregulation?

It's difficulty managing the intensity, duration, or expression of emotions.  Emotional dysregulation can look like feelings that escalate fast and are hard to bring down, impulsive reactions during distress, or a shaky sense of self. It's not "being too emotional"; it's usually a pattern that developed for understandable reasons.

  • What therapy helps with emotion regulation?

Where emotion regulation is the primary concern, we draw primarily on DBT-informed skills, including mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness, delivered within individual sessions rather than a group program. We also integrate with approaches like ACT or Emotion-Focused Therapy where helpful.

  • Is this related to ADHD?

Often, yes. Emotional reactivity and impulsivity are common features of ADHD, and emotion regulation skills can be a valuable part of treatment.

  • Do I need a specific diagnosis to benefit?

No. Emotion regulation therapy helps anyone who struggles with emotional intensity or reactivity. You don't need a particular diagnosis to benefit from the treatment. However, our psychologists have experience treating a range of disorders, including ADHD and Borderline Personality Disorder, where emotion dysregulation is a common symptom.

  • Does insurance cover therapy in Ontario?
