Therapy for Depression in Ontario
Depression is more than run-of-the-mill sadness. It’s a pervasive shift in your internal and external experience. It relates to how you experience yourself, your relationships, and your future, and it can sometimes be difficult to recognize from the inside.
At Discourse Psychology Centre, our registered psychologists provide evidence-based treatment for depression to adults and adolescents across Ontario through secure virtual sessions.
Understanding Depression
Depression often develops gradually. What begins as periodic low energy or reduced motivation can deepen into persistent low mood, loss of interest in things that once mattered, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep and appetite, and a sense of hopelessness about the future. For some, depression coexists with anxiety, making it harder to identify and treat.
Feeling this way every once in a while is normal. Feeling this way for a stretch of time, a few weeks or more, means it might be time to seek help.
One of the most insidious aspects of depression is that it tends to reinforce itself. Withdrawal from activities and relationships reduces the opportunities for positive experience, which deepens the low mood further.
Breaking that cycle is often where treatment begins.
How We Treat Depression
Treatment for depression at Discourse Psychology Centre draws primarily on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and uses strategies like Behavioural Activation. These approaches have the strongest research base for depression. CBT helps clients identify and shift the patterns of thinking that maintain low mood, while also gradually re-engaging with meaningful activities to restore motivation and pleasure.
Where appropriate, treatment may also incorporate Psychodynamic Therapy to explore the deeper emotional and relational roots of depression, or Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) to help clients reconnect with and process difficult emotions.
All treatment is tailored to the individual and guided by ongoing clinical assessment.
What we Treat
Our psychologists work with a full range of depressive presentations, including major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia), postpartum depression, seasonal depression, and depression related to grief, loss, life transitions, or chronic stress. We also work with clients experiencing depression alongside anxiety, trauma, or relationship difficulties.
When Depression is Hard to See
Not everyone facing depression has symptoms like struggling to get out of bed or maintaining daily functioning. Many of our clients are functioning. They go to work, maintaining their relationships, keep up appearances, but all the while quietly struggling with emptiness, disconnection, or a sense that life has lost its colour.
If this resonates, treatment can help.
Virtual Depression Therapy Across Ontario
All depression treatment at Discourse Psychology Centre is delivered virtually, making it accessible to clients across Ontario, including Mississauga, Oakville, Milton, and the Greater Toronto Area. Virtual therapy is equally effective as in-person treatment for depression and offers the added benefit of accessibility and flexibility.
