Couples Therapy in Ontario
Relationship difficulties are among the most painful and disorienting experiences people face.
At Discourse Psychology Centre, our registered psychologists provide evidence-based couples therapy to partners across Ontario, through secure virtual sessions, helping couples rebuild connection, resolve conflict, and find clarity about their relationship.
When Couples Seek Therapy
Most couples don’t seek therapy at the first sign of difficulty. By the time partners reach out, they’ve often been struggling for months or years, caught in cycles of conflict that never fully resolve, feeling increasingly distant from one another, or facing a specific crisis like infidelity, a major life transition (e.g., parenting), or the question of whether to stay together.
Whatever brought you here, couples therapy works best when both partners are willing to engage honestly with the process. You don’t need to agree on everything. In fact, learning how to work through disagreements is often where the most important work happens.
How We Treat Relationship Difficulties
Couples therapy at Discourse Psychology Centre draws primarily on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), one of the most extensively researched approaches for couples. EFT helps partners identify the negative cycles driving conflict and disconnection, understand the underlying emotional needs and fears maintaining those cycles, and build more secure, responsive ways of relating to one another.
Where appropriate, treatment may also draw on the Gottman Method, Discernment Counselling for couples considering separation, or CBT-informed approaches for specific conflict patterns. All treatment is tailored to the couple’s unique needs and guided by ongoing clinical assessment.
What We Work With
Our psychologists work with couples navigating a wide range of concerns, including communication breakdown, recurring conflict, emotional or physical distance, trust and infidelity, differing values or life goals, parenting disagreements, major life transitions, and questions about the future of the relationship.
We also work with couples where one or both partners are managing individual mental health concerns that are affecting the relationship.
Discernment Counselling
Not every couple seeking therapy is committed to staying together. Some partners come to therapy genuinely uncertain about whether the relationship can, or should, continue. Often, one partner is leaning towards staying and making it work, and the other is leaning out, believing that ending things is the best option for everyone.
Discernment Counselling is a structured, short-term process designed specifically for couples at this crossroads, helping each partner gain clarity about the direction they want to move in, before committing to couples therapy or separation.
Virtual Couples Therapy Across Ontario
All couples therapy at Discourse Psychology Centre is delivered virtually, making it accessible to partners across Ontario, including Mississauga, Oakville, Milton, and the Greater Toronto Area.
Virtual couples therapy is effective and convenient. It can be challenging to navigate 2 sets of schedules to find a time to meet. Virtual sessions gives you the flexibility of attending sessions together from your own home, or separately from different locations.
