Developed as part of doctoral research on Muslim mental health by registered psychologist and founder of Discourse Psychology Centre, Dr. Belal Zia, C.Psych.

Mental Health 101: for Muslims is a faith-affirming and science-backed program about mental health for Muslims with aims to improve recognition of mental health problems in Muslim communities while addressing common barriers to treatment.

What the Program Covers

Across four parts, MH101: For Muslims walks through:

01

What mental health is

Explained in plain, practical terms, and how that understanding sits comfortably within an Islamic worldview.

02

What symptoms warrant treatment

The difference between everyday struggle that can be addressed through daily ibadat and difficulties that need professional support.

03

What treatments actually look like

An honest picture of treatment options for mental health, how confidentiality works, and the different kinds of mental health providers.

04

Real barriers Muslims face

How to navigate stigma, common misconceptions, and answers to questions that prevent many Muslims from seeking help.

Why Mental Health For Muslims Matters

The real, often hidden, burden

Stigma, misconceptions, and lack of knowledge about  mental health keeps many Muslims from ever seeking help.

MH101 aims to help people recognize when support is needed, for themselves or someone they love.

2 in 3

Muslims surveyed in Dr. Zia’s research reported clinically significant psychological distress.

A faith-affirming approach

MH101 bridges evidence-based psychology with the Islamic tradition. The program includes the pioneering contributions of early Muslim scholars to mental healthcare, examples of emotional hardship in the Qur’an and Seerah, and the understanding that seeking treatment for illness is supported within Islam.
